Sixty-three years ago today, namely October 8, 1956, the first missile research institute of China, the Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of National Defense was formally established. Nie Rongzhen solemnly announced that the Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of National Defense was formally established under the approval of the Central Military Commission. It was headed by Qian Xuesen who would lead everyone to engage in the research of rockets and missiles. The founding of the Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of National Defense marked the birth of the space cause of China and the beginning of missile development by China. ?
Over the past 63 years, a series of remarkable achievements have been made in such fields as missile weapons, carrier rockets, satellites, manned space flight, lunar exploration projects and military-civilian integration as the space cause of China started from scratch when the country had a weak industrial base. All these dramatically enhanced the national defense capability, economic strength, technological strength, and national confidence and cohesion of China. ?
Through its evolvement from the Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of National Defense, the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building (the Eighth Ministry of Machine Building was incorporated into it in September 1981), the Ministry of Aerospace Industry, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Industry, China Aerospace Corporation, to China Aerospace Machinery and Electronics Corporation, CASIC has grown into a state-level strategic innovation-oriented high-tech enterprise.

At the Development Stage of the Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of National Defense
On May 26, 1956, it was determined on the meeting of the Central Military Commission that the Missile Management Bureau (the Fifth Bureau of the Ministry of National Defense) and the Missile Research Institute (the Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of National Defense) would be established.
On October 8, 1956, a ceremony was held at the 466 Hospital in the western suburb of Beijing, marking the founding of the Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of National Defense.
On February 23, 1957, the Central Military Commission decided to cancel the registration of the Fifth Bureau of the Ministry of National Defense and incorporate it into the Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of National Defense.
At the Development Stage of the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building
On November 23, 1964, the Central Committee of the CPC and the State Council decided to establish the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building on the basis of the Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of National Defense by transferring several plants and public institutions from the Third, Fourth and Fifth Ministries of Machine Building and other relevant departments as well as provincial and municipal organizations to it.
On September 7, 1981, the State Council and the Central Military Commission decided to merge the Eighth Ministry of Machine Building into the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building.
At the Development Stage of the Ministry of Aerospace Industry
On May 4, 1982, the Resolution on the Implementation Plan Regarding Institutional Reform of the Ministries and Commissions of the State Council was passed on the 23rd Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress, renaming the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building as the Ministry of Aerospace Industry.
At the Development Stage of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Industry
On April 9, 1988, the Resolution on the Institutional Reform Plan of the State Council was passed on the First Session of the Seventh National People's Congress to cancel the registration of the Ministry of Aviation Industry and the Ministry of Aerospace Industry and form the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Industry.
At the development stage of China Aerospace Corporation
On March 30, 1993, the Central Committee of the CPC issued a document to agree to the founding of the China Aerospace Corporation (China National Space Administration).
At the development stage of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation
On June 23, 1999, the State Council made an official reply to the founding of the China Aerospace Machinery and Electronics Corporation and the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation on the basis of some enterprises and public institutions affiliated to the original China Aerospace Corporation.
In July 2001, the China Aerospace Machinery and Electronics Corporation was renamed as China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation.
On November 15, 2017, according to the major decision made by the Central Committee of the CPC and the State Council on the basic completion of corporate system restructuring by enterprises owned by the whole people, and relevant work arrangements of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) of the State Council, and under the approval made by SASAC in its official reply, China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation was renamed from “China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation” to “China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Limited” as it had completed corporate system restructuring and finished all procedures for change of industrial and commercial registration.
